A charm crafted out of aquamarine to mimic the waves of the ocean, rose quartz carved to look like a seashell, and a shark fin-shaped tiger eye are just some of the pieces you’ll find in Sara Beltran’s ocean-inspired fine jewelry line Dezso by Sara Beltran. Expanded to become a lifestyle brand, Dezso (which means ‘desire’ in Latin) now also offers cotton pouches printed with images of palm trees and beach sunsets—the perfect zip-up bag for those precious jewels.
While it’s clear that the ocean plays a large role in Beltran’s line, it’s a love for travel that fuels her spirit. Not surprising, considering she splits her time between three different homes—New York, Mexico and Jaipur.
Shop Latitude speaks to Beltran about her excursions to India, her travel favorites, and what influences her work and style.
Q: How would you describe your personal style? Who or what is the inspiration behind your style?
A: My style is classic, masculine and preppy with a relaxed vibe. Being in constant movement has defined my style. I am like the ocean: always in constant movement.
"At Soho House Miami. Never a dull moment—always working!"
Q: How does travel influence your style?
A: I take inspiration from every trip as it helps me evolve and create an interesting look of my own.

Q: Which city do you have an endless love affair with and why?
A: For now, I would say Paris. It makes me feel very feminine and has been a great inspiration for my latest collection.

Q: What are your favorite spots to eat and shop at in New York?
A: I love having dinner at Bohemian. I enjoy shopping more when I travel, especially my findings when I am in Paris—I go every Sunday to the flea market there.

Q: You spend a lot of time in Jaipur. What are your favorite spots there?
A: Bar Palladio is my friend Barbara Miolini’s restaurant, so it is like being at home. I love going to Munnu Kasliwal's farmhouse, since it will always be the most special place in Jaipur to me. I also love hanging out at Kothi 28, a boutique guest-house.

Q: How has Jaipur influenced your creative and design process?
A: A year after starting my jewelry line, I moved to Jaipur for three years (from 2007 to 2010). It changed my life completely, personally and professionally. My Mexico-India life represents my two worlds. I am proud to be Mexican, but I wouldn’t be who I am without India. Every time I go back it changes my life and stimulates my brand like no other place, as it’s where everything gets made. I love India and I always will.
"This is my favorite place to work. The man in the photo is the master of carving for the pieces produced for Dezso."
Q: One thing that's always in your suitcase/carry-on?
A: I cannot live without Natura Bisse’s Diamond Extreme face lotion.
Charms galore!
