100% cotton handloomed jamdani fabric.
Jamdani is a special weave that takes great time and skill to create. the entire process happens without aid of technology or machines. each "buti," as the white motif is called, is woven by hand, one line at a time as the fabric itself is woven on a hand loom. this heritage craft is native to the indian state of west bengal where our artisans are located. this fabric is woven in small villages, in the homes of weavers.
Along with slubs, slight variances in the density of the weave is normal-- and usually appears as a faint stripe-- and is due to the humidity in the air in the morning vs. afternoon, and the strength of the weaver throughout the day. (read: you aren't the only one with the most energy after your morning coffee.) we love these tiny stripes as they remind us of the human care and touch that went into its creation.

we can't seem to take this caftan off ourselves. light and flowy, we wear the tulum long to brunch and to the beach and everything in between. a loose shape without feeling dowdy because of the drapey fabric.
this is our first fabric to be printed with all natural dyes. bagru, india is a center for natural dyes. read more here on the blog. the color varies from lot to lot depending on the sun, the air, the minerals in the water and the plant dyes themselves. the result is always stunning.
the black color is a signature shade from bagru, and is made from iron (usually horseshoes and sugarcane). the natural grey is a result of the normal washing process, affected by alum.
