What inspired you to venture into home fashion and how does the runway influence your design?
My first love is textiles for the home and fashion, so this was just a matter of me following my heart and passion. I always look to the runway for new trends. Home furnishings can be behind fashion trends so I like to start there for inspiration.
Describe Tamara Magel design in 3 words. And then tell us why you chose those words.
Exotic, chic, glamour. I love other cultures so my designs have a touch of exotic influences from around the world. I like taking these worldly ancient influences and making them chic and modern by making patterns bolder and colors more vibrant. I always add a touch of glamour like fur or lucite.
Where is your favorite place to work and why?
The Hamptons! I have a love affair with The Hamptons. I drive around and literally feel like I am in love. The ocean and farmland in the same view is incredibly nurturing and intense for me visually as well as spiritually. It's one of the most beautiful places in US.

Which city's style reflects you most as a designer?
I take essences from a lot of cities combined, but I'd say New York, Paris, Marrekesh, Istanbul, and Kenya.
What is the most wearable and popular piece you've designed in your relatively new fashion career?
My wrap dress! I wear it for coffee, then by the pool, and then I dress it up with big jewels to go out at night -- all in the same day.
How would you describe your travel style?
Easy and comfortable, I take lots of dresses and knit sweaters to layer. Dresses can be so versatile while traveling.

Can you give us a sense of what a day in your life is like?
No day is ever the same, but I get up early and do my meditation. I use essential oils to clear my head -- certain days I focus on my interior design clients, so I may drive into the city to get fabrics at the design center. I'll meet my staff at our SoHo office for a quick catch up, run to pilates, then head to the garment center to check on the clothing line. I meet clients in the early afternoon and then go to my favorite dinner spot, Maialino, at the Gramercy Park Hotel. The days where I stay in The Hamptons, I love working from home looking into the yard for inspiration. I really get creative there after running around the city. I work on design ideas for clients and the line. I then meet friends for lunch outside, do pilates, and really do things that nurture me. Having NYC and The Hamptons allows me to really satisfy all aspects of myself.
