The prolific artisans, mostly women head of family clans, belong to the Wayuu tribe in the region called “La Goajira” a dry, and desertic peninsula where both Colombia and Venezuela share their northern borders. They have carried a 1,000 year-old tradition of weaving and using primitive looms to create these “suspended sacs” used daily by the tribes for sleep, rest, embrace, bond, love, shelter from the harsh elements and ultimately as an expression of exhuberant creativity.
Their structure is fairly simple, the body made of cotton yarn, either dyed or left natural put through a system of manual looms, tied at each end with a heavy braided lazo of strings made of Dacron, the one that will facilitate proper hanging and support. The men dip these ends and its ties onto kerosene to keep bugs and insects from crawling into the hammock.
An interesting feature is the tightness of the weave: light enough that allows air to pass through it and keep the body cool, but at the same time incredibly strong and flexible, where the user can feel it stretching along the countour of their body for ultimate relaxation. The work is completed by a fringe that is usually heavily decorated made of a crochet-like chain weave and motifs can vary from flowers, geometric figures, even names upon request.
Venezuelan ‘chinchorros’ are one of the longest hammocks produced within other latin american cultures. They can be over 9’ long and 4 feet wide, weighing an average of 5 lbs. It takes between 2 to 6 months to make one, the fringe alone, takes an entire month. This piece sometimes is designed to drop over 16- 18” to flip and use as a partial blanket during cooler nites or when the wind is strong or blows sand near the coast.
The art of weaving hammocks by the wayuu also called “goajiros” speak of their resilience, strong personalities, mystic spirits, and their hunger for strong colors and vivacious combinations to contrast with their arid and sparse natural surroundings.
Shown here in Black.
Hammock measures approximately 12' Long x 6' Wide (King Size). Good for 2 people.
